Rio Tinto Stadium primed for action: Newest US soccer palace offers great sight lines, inside and out

When the first soccer ball is struck at Rio Tinto Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 9, an exciting new era will begin in the Salt Lake City suburb of Sandy, Utah… On the planning and construction front, making Rio Tinto Stadium a reality took serious teamwork. Being the point company for that effort fell to ICON Venue Group, which served as the owner’s representative for SCP Worldwide.

“One of the interesting things we had to accomplish is that the opening date was pushed from Oct. 27 to Oct. 9 because of the ESPN broadcast of the game. Making that deadline is a true testament to the project team and the joint venture – working well together,” said Charlie Thornton, ICON Venue Group Senior Vice President and Project Executive.

Berlin Celebrates the Grand Opening of O2 World

Among Berlin’s residents, celebrities, and dignitaries, ICON Venue Group celebrated the Grand Opening of O2 World on September 10, 2008. Inside the arena, the guests enjoyed a cirque-like performance from Enno-Ilke Uhde, while outdoor onlookers enjoyed a bright fireworks spectacle coupled with graphics on the building’s exterior LED façade. The arena hosted a concert from local favorite Herbert Gronemeyer on September 11 and Metallica kicked off its “Death Magnetic” tour on September 12. ICON is so proud of its work representing Anschutz Entertainment Group and being a part of such a wonderful project.

Inland Empire Celebrates the Grand Opening of Citizens Business Bank Arena

ICON Venue Group is pleased to celebrate the grand opening of Citizens Business Bank Arena with a multitude of opening events commemorating California’s newest sports and entertainment venue. The opening week included a ribbon cutting, a VIP Gala, a Community Day, an exhibition game between the LA Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the first game of the arena’s home ECHL team: the Ontario Reign. The arena is expected to bring world-class entertainment acts to the Inland Empire. Carrie Underwood, Metallica, and Neil Diamond are among the acts scheduled to perform.

Ground broken for Penguins' new home

With Mario Lemieux appropriately at the center of the line, officials from government and the Penguins ceremonially broke ground on a new hockey arena today, using shovels with shafts made from star Sidney Crosby's sticks.

The $290 million facility will replace the nearby Mellon Arena in the lower Hill District. Also designed to accommodate basketball and other indoor sports, circuses and concerts, the new arena is to open in fall 2010.

RSL: Sandy stadium to open Oct. 9

Real Salt Lake made it official Tuesday: The team will open its new stadium in Sandy on Oct. 9 - three weeks earlier than its original opening date.

RSL owner Dave Checketts announced that the team and partner Layton-Turner Construction have finalized an agreement to finish the stadium just in time for RSL's two last regular-season games.

Firm selected for stadium design

Rossetti Architects and ICON Venue Group will take the helm for a new $115 million, 18,500-seat soccer-specific stadium on Chester's waterfront, team ownership group Keystone Sports and Entertainment LLC, announced Tuesday. According to a release, Rossetti will design the stadium while ICON, a joint venture between Romani Group Inc. and AEG, will provide project management services.

"Rossetti's noted innovative and stunning designs coupled with ICON's well-earned reputation as soccer-specific development experts are the perfect combination," said Nick Sakiewicz, CEO and operating partner of Keystone Sports, in a release. "They will be a tremendous complement to our project team."

O2 World to Open on September 10

The Anschutz Entertainment Group and Telefónica O2 Germany announced the date on which the O2 World is to open. One of the most modern multi-functional arenas in the world will be celebrating its opening on September 10th, 2008 – two years to the day after the foundation stone was laid.

With more than 300,000 LEDs covering a total surface area of 1,440 square meters, the O2 World façade is one of the largest outdoor installations in the world and will provide the city of Berlin with another attraction. The opening date for the O2 World and the events that are to follow were announced on the illuminated façade. 

Dynamo reviewing designers for stadium

The Houston Dynamo plans to select a designer by early April for its proposed stadium, which the Major League Soccer team hopes to open sometime in 2010.

ICON Venue Group, the developer in charge of the project, issued a proposal March 24 requiring a quick turnaround time. Responses are due today, with finalists to be interviewed April 4 in Denver, site of Icon’s home office. A decision could be made soon afterward, according to the RFP.

The Dynamo wants to have an architect in hand as it continues to negotiate a financing package in which the club and the city would share the cost of the $80 million project, team President Oliver Luck said.

The O2 Triumphs at Pollstar Awards

The O2 arena, whose design and construction was managed by ICON Venue Group, has won both Best New Concert Venue and Best International Arena of the Year at the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards.

In just 7 months has hosted some of the biggest live music acts around such as Justin Timberlake, Rolling Stones, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, 8 nights of Take That, 17 nights of Spice Girls, and the legendary Barbra Streisand plus gig of the decade - Led Zeppelin. Prince made The O2 his home during summer 2007 to play 21 sold out nights in the arena, which has already become the world’s highest grossing music arena.

ICON is thrilled to have been part of such a wonderful project and congratulates its London project team including Tim Romani, Tom Noonan, Gary Hunt, and Tommy Foster for their hard work and dedication.
