AEG, MGM Resorts International offer first look at arena on Las Vegas Strip

AEG, the Los Angeles-based powerhouse entertainment and arena company, and MGM Resorts, which owns 10 Strip casino-hotels, have joined forces to build the sports and entertainment venue without public money on 12 acres between New York-New York and Frank Sinatra Drive. MGM will demolish two temporary office buildings on the site that are left over from the CityCenter project.

Groundbreaking is expected in April or May with a projected opening 22 months later, in spring 2016, said Tim Romani, president and chief executive of Denver-based ICON Venue Group, the project manager.

AECOM chosen to design downtown arena for Sacramento Kings

AECOM, the architectural group behind everything from the Olympic Park in London to Aggie Stadium at University of California Davis, has been selected as the architect for the Sacramento Kings downtown arena project.

... “We have assembled the best artists in the world to design and build the new arena,” Kings lead owner Vivek Ranadivé said in a news release. “From the Bird’s Nest in Beijing to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, AECOM has the resume to design and create the most technologically advanced and fan-centric arena in the world.”

AECOM joins ICON Venue Group as the project manager and Turner Construction as lead builder on the Sacramento arena project.

World-famed Architect Announced for MGM Arena

Populous, one of world’s powerhouse sports architectural firms, has won the job of designing MGM Resorts International’s proposed $350 million 20,000-seat arena slated for a site between New York-New York and Monte Carlo just off the Strip.

MGM, which owns 10 Strip properties, is joining forces with Los Angeles-based AEG to privately build the sports and entertainment venue. MGM projects to break ground in the summer of 2014 with an opening set for summer of 2016. AEG is one of the premier sports and entertainment companies in the world.

... “This project is exciting. We’ve been working with AEG on developing an arena in Las Vegas since 2007,” said Tim Romani, president of ICON Venue Group, the project management company that coordinated the architect selection process. “They finally landed with the best site and partnership. There’s a buzz around this project.”

BBVA Compass Stadium wins multiple Houston Business Journal Landmark Awards

Houston Dynamo, April 13, 2013

BBVA Compass Stadium, an AEG Facilities venue, claimed two awards as one of the Houston’s most influential real estate projects at the Houston Business Journal 2013 Landmark Awards.

BBVA Compass Stadium was awarded two of the four nominations, including Public Assembly and Public-Private Partnership. The stadium, home of the 2012 Eastern Conference Champion Houston Dynamo and Texas Southern University college football, was also a finalist in the Community Impact and Hospitality/Entertainment categories.

“We are truly honored to be recognized as an exemplary property that makes up this wonderfully diverse city,” said general manager Doug Hall. “This project was a collaboration of many organizations, all of whom worked tirelessly to build a state-of-the-art facility that would continue to make Houston shine. These honors, which come to us in our first year of operation, are a strong source of pride for the East End community, the teams that play here, our staff and most importantly, the fans.”

Sabres Break Ground

HARBORcenter, April 13, 2013

BUFFALO, N.Y. (April 13, 2013) —- HARBORcenter Development, LLC officially broke ground today on HARBORcenter, a mixed-use hockey and entertainment facility being developed on the Webster Block in downtown Buffalo, directly across Perry Street from First Niagara Center.

“In the two years since I purchased the Buffalo Sabres, the passionate support of our fans has made it evident that hockey is woven into the fabric of this community in a way that is rivaled by few other areas,” said Sabres Owner Terry Pegula. “With HARBORcenter, our goal is to create a destination representative of that passion which will transcend the sport, helping to build downtown Buffalo into a place that visitors can’t wait to come back to again.”

… Populous is the architect for the project, with GSB serving as associate hotel architect and Mortenson Construction serving as construction manager. ICON Venue Group is the owner’s representative firm.

William Mannarelli Confirmed to Speak at Stadia & Arena Conference in Istanbul

University Draws Up Ambitious Game Plan to Begin Raising Funds for New Stadium

President Tony Frank, with the unanimous approval of the Board of Governors of the CSU System, has opted to go forward with plans to raise money for an on-campus football stadium – a project he hopes will unite alumni and bring greater recognition to the University on every level.

... A stadium consulting firm, Denver-based ICON Venue Group, was hired using private funds to choose the most feasible site on campus and provide a preliminary stadium design. ICON has designed and built numerous sporting venues around the world, including Sports Authority Field and the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Council Approves Funding for Edmonton Arena

Journal of Commerce, January 30, 2013

Edmonton city council and the Katz Group have negotiated an agreement that ensures the construction of a proposed $480 million downtown arena.

“This is a milestone agreement for a world class facility that will drive the ongoing revitalization of downtown Edmonton,” said Daryl Katz, chair of the Katz Group, in a press release. “It also helps to ensure the Oilers’ long-term sustainability in Edmonton. This has been a challenging process for all concerned but we are confident we will all look back on the end result with pride and satisfaction at what we have achieved.”

... The Edmonton Arena project involves the construction of a multi-purpose sports and entertainment facility including: a professional hockey arena; associated food, beverage, retail and entertainment areas; ice plant facilities; and parking garage and loading areas.

... ICON Venue Group has been named the project manager.

Construction for the new arena is expected to start in late summer to early fall, with completion in 2016.
