Ace in the Hole

Auditoria Magazine, Annual 2015

Las Vegas: the home of high rollers, stratospheric expectations and monumental pomp. MGM and AEG’s new Las Vegas Arena will, says its website, ‘bring the city, and the world, a whole new place to play… The Arena is what the Coliseum was to Rome. It will redefine and reshape how the monolithic events of our time are experienced and remembered.’ Low-key it isn’t.

The developers of the US $375m indoor arena broke ground on May 1, 2014, with completion scheduled for spring 2016, building through a period when Las Vegas’s offering to visitors continues to evolve....

...For Rob Stephens, senior vice president at Icon Venue Group, the Arena’s project manager, a key challenge is making sure the building has sufficient revenue potential. “These buildings are driven by sponsorship opportunities in many ways. We have to drive revenue and get innovative ideas within a reasonable budget."

How long will it take to build a new stadium at CSU?

The Coloradoan, April 13, 2014

How long will it take to build a new stadium at CSU?

Any construction CSU hopes to complete for the proposed on-campus stadium will come down to the progress of all things plant growth. Short of bulldozing a parking lot, no structural work can begin before the Plant Environmental Research Center moves from Lake Street to its potential home south of Prospect Road near Spring Creek...

...With assistance from CSU, The Coloradoan worked with ICON Venue Group — hired by the university to oversee the project — and nonpartisan field experts at Turner Construction and the University of Southern California to establish a realistic timeline of how long it will take to build the stadium should shovels break ground today — no matter when "today" might be.

The consensus — including from ICON, speaking on CSU's behalf — was nearly two years, should weather not slow crews down. But plenty has to be done ahead of time; primarily raising the requisite $110 million in private donations and uprooting the PERC.

State of Downtown speakers: Arena, arena, arena

Sacramento Business Journal, January 28, 2014

Plenty of words about downtown Sacramento’s new arena were broken up only by pictures of the same, but on the morning renderings of the long-awaited project were released, the main speakers at the State of Downtown event could be forgiven.

Keynote speaker Tim Romani of prominent developer Icon Venue Group said because he’s become so professionally and personally invested in the project, he gets excited when he walks the streets surrounding the arena site and contemplates the future, occasional current shabbiness aside.

“This is the district that when the arena comes, it will regenerate,” Romani said, citing figures from past projects his company did in Denver, Kansas City and Los Angeles as examples. “It is going to be a catalyst.”

Mayor Kevin Johnson formally unveils drawings of new Sacramento Kings arena

The Sacramento Bee, January 28, 2014

Formally unveiling drawings of the new Sacramento Kings arena Tuesday, Mayor Kevin Johnson said he’s confident a measure challenging the city’s $258 million subsidy for the project will be kept off the ballot...

...On Tuesday, the executive managing the arena development urged the community to come together behind the arena effort.

Referring to STOP and its leaders, Tim Romani of ICON Venue Group told the downtown audience: “We need to listen to them, we need to hear them … but in the end, this arena will get built.”

Romani said Sacramento’s city-owned arena can spark a downtown revival comparable to other ICON-managed arena projects in Los Angeles, Denver and Kansas City. Vast portions of downtown Denver were a wasteland before the city built new facilities for basketball, hockey, football and baseball starting in the mid-1990s, said Romani, the event’s keynote speaker.

Sacramento Kings Unveil Final Arena Drawings

The Sacramento Bee, January 28, 2014

The Sacramento Kings unveiled final drawings of their planned $448 million downtown arena Monday, depicting a see-through building they say captures what is quintessentially Sacramento, without looking quite like anything else that has been built here.

Following their vow to create an indoor-outdoor building that does justice to Sacramento’s warm climate, team architects gave the arena a half-block-long front entry dominated by five glass aircraft hangar doors that can fold upward to create a five-story opening, allowing people in the arena plaza and even motorists on nearby J Street to see directly into the facility...

... Arena project construction manager Tim Romani of ICON Venue Group will display the designs publicly today at the Downtown Sacramento Partnership “State of the Downtown” breakfast. Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson also will speak.

Romani said the team plans to begin demolition of much of Downtown Plaza in June. Construction on the arena would start in fall.
