Broomfield Sports and Entertainment, in cooperation with the City of Broomfield, desired a venue with fan features and acoustic qualities on par with Pepsi Center. With an all inclusive budget of just $45 million, ICON had to be creative in choosing how to derive the greatest impact from the limited dollars. With minor league hockey and basketball tenants in place, a multipurpose seating bowl was conceived to optimize sight lines and intimacy for both sports without compromising the concert environment. Although the venue was originally built for hockey and basketball as Broomfield Event Center, the venue became 1st Bank Center in March 2010 when Peak Entertainment transformed it into a successful music-centric venue.
