In 2011, ICON completed a feasibility study for the City of Sacramento in its efforts to reach an agreement with the Sacramento Kings ownership for the development of an Entertainment and Sports Center in the Railyards area of downtown Sacramento. In 2013, after a courtship with Anaheim and Seattle, the Kings were purchased by Sacramento Basketball Holdings and their vision to build a state-of-the-art arena downtown was born. In June 2013, ICON was hired as the Owner’s Representative and was tasked with managing the design and construction of the NBA’s newest gem.
The project encompasses four city blocks in the heart of downtown that served as a major catalyst for development in the surrounding area. The arena includes several impressive features such as five-story-tall aircraft hangar doors and the NBA’s first 4k videoboard. The arena is the first indoor sports venue to earn LEED Platinum designation, the highest level of global recognition for environmentally conscious buildings and organizations.
Outside the main entrance, an $8 million sculpture called “Coloring Book” by artist Jeff Koons greets visitors as they enter the building. All the concession stands at the facility are branded around local eateries and 90 percent of food and beverage concessions are sourced from a network of hundreds of farms within 150 miles.
